2006-2007: Changing History World War II changed the world. People from all walks of life came together for a common goal, and in the process found communities beyond the ones they were born into. Men who thought they were the only ones who had these strange feelings and women who felt there was no way to express who they were met each other and discovered that not only were they not the only ones, there were thousands more just like them. For the first time many gay and lesbian people gathered in large numbers and began to imagine what life could be like without fear and compromise. Tucson grew from a small desert town to a major city with the influx of young men and women training at the airbases in the area and working for the war effort. The big band was king of the musical world. Trumpets, trombones, and saxophones came together to create some of the most popular music ever. This season we'll invoke the classic sounds of the era with with fantastic vocal jazz arrangements of “In the Mood,” “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore,” and “Begin the Beguine.” We’ll visit Broadway and Hollywood as well as great modern choral works including the “Alleluia” of Randall Thompson, music of composers interned in the German concentration camps, and the hauntingly beautiful music of Margaret Dryburgh and the vocal orchestra she created among her fellow prisoners in a Japanese prison camp in Sumatra. Join us for one of the most powerful seasons in Desert Voices history. ![]() 2005-2006: Reaching Out This season included three shows: "As We Dream by the Fire", for the holidays; "A Passionate Affair", which came just in time for Valentine's Day; and "A Many-Gendered Fling", in which we explored gender in its many variations and which featured an entire act of songs by Namoli Brennet. 2004-2005: Building Bridges Building Bridges for Desert Voices means reaching out to the GLBT community to share our voices, to share our songs and message of hope for a time when everyone will have equal rights. Building Bridges for Desert Voices means reaching out to our entire Tucson community, to demonstrate to all the people in our community that we are human; to tear down walls and barriers that keep us from understanding one another; to work to bridge that gap of understanding; to help unite people into one community, one equal body of citizens of the world, where we all live and work and play together in harmony and peace. "About Building Bridges" by Mae Krueger The theme for the 2004-2005 season was inspired by the life of Mary Weber, an exceptional woman and singer who spent her life reaching out to others - Building Bridges. 2003-2004 Our holiday show for Season 15, "Home (Oh!) for the Holidays", put a rather gay slant on the season and included a gay re-telling of The Nutcracker, including a choral setting of Tchaikovsky's ballet. Our spring show, "Come (Out) As You Are", featured coming out stories from all stages of life, a camp for all us gay kids, and reminiscing on coming out as an adult after trying to live as straight. And many more to be added from our archives soon! Images from our past seasons are found on our "Media" page. |
