Sing With Us!
Our unique LGBTQIA+ and Ally chorus welcomes all voices regardless of choral experience, age, gender, race, creed, or sexuality.
Join us for our first 2026 “Winterludes”
Concert Rehearsal on Sunday August 30, 2026!
Desert Voices is an LGBTQIA+ and ally chorus of approximately 120 singers open to adult singers of all levels and experience. To join the chorus, interested singers must complete a voice check before the first rehearsal. The voice check confirms that singers can match pitch, practice independently, and memorize programs of music.
If you have trouble matching pitch, we might encourage you to take voice lessons and try joining at a later date.
As a mixed chorus (Sopranos, Altos, Tenors, and Basses), it is important for us to have balanced sections to achieve the best sound! We also have to consider our rehearsal space and venues. We may have a waitlist for specific voice parts, and we encourage singers who are not placed to participate by joining our 5th Section - our volunteer and social group.
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us!

FAQ’s
What is a voice check?
A voice check is not an audition. You don’t need to have anything prepared! Your voice check will be scheduled with the Artistic Director, Assistant Directors on hand to assess your vocal abilities, and our Chorus Manager and Section Leaders available to welcome you to Desert Voices, provide you with a Membership Guide, and answer your questions. You will be asked about your musical experience and we will have you sing through vocal exercises so we can figure out your range and vocal timbre. We will then ask you to sing back a few pitches after you listen to them on the piano. With this information, we will assign you a voice part, (soprano 1, alto 2, tenor 1, etc.) whether you end up being assigned to a section or not. Singing in a voice range that is comfortable and fits your voice is the goal!
Why do we need to do a voice check?
Desert Voices is a non-auditioned chorus that welcomes members with varying experience. All potential members are required to do a voice check before officially joining the chorus. We use this opportunity to ensure you are singing in the correct section and to make sure that the choir is well balanced in each section. We also use this time to assess if you should consider getting more singing experience before joining. Even if you have a lot of choral experience and vocal training, it is a way that we can meet you and get to know you! It can also be a good time to ask us questions and learn more about the choir.
What should I bring to the rehearsal?
Your amazing self! All singers must have completed a voice check and been assigned to a voice part before attending rehearsals. After your voice check, you will be sent information on how to register and what to expect in rehearsals. Copies of music will be provided at the first rehearsals; many members also prefer to use iPads or tablets. If you are using paper copies, please bring a binder and a pencil!
Are there requirements to join Desert Voices?
While Desert Voices is a non-audition chorus, we do have requirements and guidelines that members agree to in order to participate. Our voice check is the first step! Each member will receive our Desert Voices Membership Guide and sign our Membership Agreement. Achieving minimum attendance standards at rehearsals, paying dues, attendance at dress rehearsals, reading all chorus communications, memorization of music, and individual practice are all necessary. Failure to meet some of these requirements may prevent you from singing in concerts.
Dates for rehearsals, retreats, dress rehearsals, and concert dates are communicated at the beginning of each semester on Choir Genius. Outreach events, social events, and sectionals are communicated as they are scheduled. It is each choir member's responsibility to stay informed of the calendar and give proper notice to their section leader if they will be absent!
How often does Desert Voices rehearse?
We rehearse every Sunday evening from 4:30–7:30 pm at Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church (1200 N Campbell Ave), with sectionals and other special rehearsals as needed. We also schedule in 1 retreat per concert season, with our Fall retreat scheduled on Saturday, November 7, 10am - 3:00pm
How do I stay informed in the chorus?
Every member of Desert Voices is given an account on Choir Genius when they join. This website and app has many features including:
• Attendance tracking
• Desert Voices calendar
• Member profiles, photos and contact info
• Bulletin board
• Documents relevant to membership
• PDF’s of all music, along with practice tracks
• A Store
Throughout the rehearsal season in preparation for concerts, the Artistic Director and Chorus Council post weekly bulletins with updates on what to practice and other relevant information. These posts are sent to member’s emails in addition to being posted on the Choir Genius Bulletin board. Section Leaders also email important information to their sections.
Are there financial obligations associated with membership?
Members of Desert Voices are required to pay dues of $100 per semester (or $200 for a full year). Members are responsible for their own concert attire: black tops, black bottoms, black socks, and black dress shoes. These standards are more thoroughly explained in our Membership Guide.
Members also need to plan on purchasing a Desert Voices shirt for $25 (larger sizes may run higher). These are often worn for outreach DV events, and encouraged for social gatherings!
What if I cannot afford the costs of membership? Am I still able to join?
Yes! Desert Voices does not turn anyone away because of finances. We have scholarships available and members of the choir are generous and often help members with dues and other costs. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns about your ability to afford dues. It is your responsibility to let us know how we can help you!
